Winston‑Salem & Surrounding area Museum Discounts & Free Days

Winston-Salem is a virtual treasure trove of history, with tons of options to learn about the foundation of the city as it is today, as well as how it used to be. The interiors of the historical houses I’ll mention would certainly be enjoyed by older kids, as well as well-supervised younger children.

Kaleideum

Kaleideum is one of the best hands-on museums in the Triad for kids, offering interactive exhibits focused on science, creativity, and play. This is a great option if you’re looking for an engaging indoor activity that keeps kids learning while having fun.

Kaleideum Discounts

Kaleideum participates in several programs that make visiting more affordable for families.

  • Museums for All – Kaleideum is part of the Museums for All program. SNAP/EBT and WIC cardholders can show their card along with a photo ID to receive admission for just $3 per person for up to six people. Payment must be made in cash or another accepted form.
  • Blue Star Museums – Kaleideum also participates in the Blue Star Museums program. Active-duty military personnel and their families can receive free admission from Armed Forces Day through Labor Day as part of this nationwide initiative.

NCMA – north Carolina Museum of the Arts (Formerly SECCA- Southeastern Center for Contemporary Art)

PLEASE NOTE: NCMA Winston-Salem’s campus is CLOSED in 2026 for construction improvements.

I took my 5 year old over the weekend, not really knowing what to expect. She LOVED it! The space is huge and the current exhibition had some really neat interactive aspects so even though you couldn’t touch the art itself, you could look at it and smell it, and there was even a sample piece of the material that could be handled – that helped satisfy the curiosity of “What does that feel like??” while still respecting the rules of the exhibit. The pricing for the museum is $8 for adults while kids are free, and the adjacent James G. Hanes estate is also free and open to the public.

Location: 750 Marguerite Dr, Winston‑Salem, NC 27106
Why Go: Contemporary art found here offers stimulating exhibitions and rotating installations that invite curiosity and reflection.

NCMA Museum Discounts:

  • Admission to the People’s Collection in East and West buildings and the Museum Park is free.
  • There is a charge for some special exhibitions and programs, such as concerts, films, classes, and performances. Admission is charged to visit West Building during the annual spring fundraiser Art in Bloom.
