Make New Friends and Sing Great Music with Greensboro Youth Chorus
By Guest Blogger Althea Hall
My daughter, Zoe, has always loved to sing. Morning, noon and night you will hear her singing songs from the radio or her own original tunes. Singing simply makes her happy! Knowing that music was one of her passions I was thrilled to learn about the Greensboro Youth Chorus (GYC) which has a 31-year history in Greensboro. Zoe auditioned and has been a member of GYC for three years and loves it! As a parent who once upon a time sang in a children’s choir, I understand first-hand the benefits of the stellar music education and life-lessons she and her fellow singers receive from GYC.
The Greensboro Youth Chorus is enthusiastically led by Artistic Director, Rebecca Suco, a graduate of Westminster Choir College. Rebecca has a passion for choral music and helping children develop a lifelong love of singing. As a member of GYC, Zoe has performed all over Greensboro and throughout North Carolina. She is looking forward to joining the older group of singers who travel to perform at Biltmore’s A Candlelight Christmas every year. The chorus also performs with Greensboro’s premiere choral ensemble, Bel Canto. This year, GYC is travelling to New York to perform in Carnegie Hall! Cool fact: Grammy winner and MacArthur ‘Genius’ grant recipient Rhiannon Giddens is a GYC alumni.
In addition to a great music education, our family loves that Zoe is making friends from all over the Triad. The experiences these singers have together is so unique and I know she is building life-long friendships as they learn songs from other cultures and languages, travel, and perform for members of our community together.
The Greensboro Youth Chorus will be presenting their Spring Concert, “Life Has Loveliness” in a few weeks and I would like to personally invite you to bring your kids to see this wonderful ensemble perform. Save the date for Saturday, May 11th at 4:30 pm. They will be performing at the brand new theater at Well-Spring Retirement Community. The performance is about an hour long, totally family friendly, and the best part – it’s free!
Do you have a child who loves to sing? Come join the Greensboro Youth Chorus for the 2019-20 season! They welcome singers in grades 2-12 with unchanged voices. Make new friends, sing great music, build confidence and perform for the community. Choir placement interviews take about 5 minutes and no preparation is necessary (May 13 and May 20th, 5-7 pm). Call 336.355.1774 or email greensboroyouthchorus@gmail.com to schedule your appointment.
