Weekend Trips in NC
The spring is one of my favorite times to travel. First, because after a long winter I am beyond ready for some different scenery. Second, because everything is typically a lot cheaper then it would be in the summer. With three kids I am constantly looking for those cheap travel deals. If you are like me and want travel ideas without breaking the bank, here are some fun, yet reasonable weekend trips in North Carolina.
Weekend Trips in NC
Ocean Isle
Of course when I think of Spring Break, the first thing that comes to my mind is the beach. Unfortunately, during our spring break it is not always warm. However do not let that deter you from visiting the beach because there is still a ton to do.
Ocean Isle is a great beach town with many activities to choose from while also being a quick drive to many neighboring beaches. While in Ocean Isle be sure to take your thrill seeker to The Swamp Park. The Swamp Park offers zipline tours, a ropes course, and of course swamp boat eco tours. It is sure to be a fun time for all ages. If you are looking for a slower pace activity, visit the Museum of Coastal Carolina to learn about the natural history of the area. Wind down at a local restaurant like Sharky’s Waterfront or Jinks Creek to take in the beautiful scenery and good eats. Then finish your evening on the beach and fly a kite or take a sunset stroll.
If you want to venture off the island, there are so many options within thirty minutes. Head north to Wilmington or south to Myrtle Beach for many other adventures and dining options. Below are some other recommendations for your Ocean Isle Beach trip.
- Inlet View Bar and Grill (Shallotte)
- Drift Coffee & Kitchen (Ocean Isle Beach)
- Bagel Dock Cafe (Calabash)
- Provisions Company (Holden Beach)
- Silver Coast Winery (Ocean Isle Beach)
- Sunset Beach Swing Bridge Museum (Sunset Beach)
- Kindred Spirit Mailbox (Bird Island)
- North Carolina Aquarium at Fort Fisher (Carolina Beach)
Asheville
Asheville is a favorite among my family. There is history, beauty and some really good food. It is kid friendly but can also be a romantic getaway. For all of those reasons, we had to add it to our spring break list. Start your trip with the Hop on, Hop off Trolley Tour. If you are new to the area, this is a great way to get acquainted with the city. Make sure to stop by The Grove Park Inn and take in the gorgeous views. The hotel is full of history and stocked up with multiple restaurants. We are fans of Edison, Craft Ales + Kitchen. After your stop at Grove Park, make sure to hop off at the River Arts District and Downtown area. Biltmore is also a must do for all ages. It is absolutely stunning and the amount of history packed into this one place is wonderful and worth the money. Below find other local recommendations.
Charlotte
If the mountains or the coast are not for you, visit Charlotte. Charlotte is the largest city in the state and does not fall short of fun family activities. Explore at Discovery Place, Play at Carowinds, or go on an adventure at the nearby Lazy 5 Ranch. No matter what you choose, you are bound to have a good time. If you are looking for a one stop shop for family fun, visit Great Wolf Lodge and literally stay in your bathing suit and pajamas the whole time. If you visit during the week you can find some great deals and discounts versus visiting on the weekend. If you want to add a little nature to your urban getaway, travel 30 minutes north to Lake Norman. Below are just a few local recommendations of what Charlotte has to offer.
- Blackfinn
- Cowfish Sushi Burger Bar
- The Ashbury
- US National White Water Center
- NASCAR Hall of Fame
- Charlotte Knights Baseball Game
Each of these locations are guaranteed to be a fun time for your family. Ocean Isle, Asheville and Charlotte are close, reasonable and great for all ages. Enjoy your spring break and make some family memories!
