Summer Fun Ideas for the Family

By Guest Blogger Lisa Mathis

SUMMER! For some parents, this word invokes thoughts of tranquil beaches and alarm clock-free days. For others, it triggers the dreaded thought, “How will I keep my kids busy all summer?” Lucky for you, we’ve got some great summer fun ideas up our sleeves that we don’t mind sharing!

Make it Educational

Just because school is out for the summer, it does not mean that your kids should stop learning. Summer is the perfect opportunity to have those hand-on experiences with your kids that you don’t have time for the rest of the year.

Our country is full of rich history. The east coast boasts of landmarks and museums documenting and preserving our nation’s early history. Take a trip up the east coast and explore places like Williamsburg and get acquainted with the colonial times. Keep heading north to see Washington DC, our nation’s capital. Or, maybe you want to see where the Pilgrims settled up in Massachusetts! These are all great places to learn.

Our country’s midsection is full of diverse landforms and topography. There are mountains, deserts, canyons, and swamps! There are rivers and lakes and National Parks in every corner of our country. Sounds like a camping trip to me!

Way out west, we see even more mountains and waterfalls, geysers and wildlife! Pristine beaches line the coast and are filled with marine life to explore. You really can’t go wrong anywhere!

Hometown Learning

Chances are, you live pretty close to a children’s museum. Children’s museums are a great place to visit because they are geared toward children. You don’t have to worry about your kids touching and breaking exhibits! But, you may have to worry about how you will convince them to leave!

Many libraries offer summer fun reading programs for kids. If you don’t already have a library card, summer is a great time to get one! After a busy day of fun, your kids can relax with their library books while you get a few minutes of quiet time to tackle dinner!

Make it Fun

After a year of learning, kids are ready for a summer break! Here are a few things that your kids may enjoy this summer!

Water Fun

One of the best things about summer is that the weather is nice enough to spend time outdoors and enjoy water activities. Many communities have parks with swimming pools and/or splash pads for everyone to cool down in during those hot summer months. Don’t forget the sunscreen!

Summer Camp

Perhaps your kids are looking for something different this summer. Maybe your socially-oriented daughter misses being around kids her age.
