Why It’s Cool to be a Soccer Mom
I am a member of a team, and I rely on the team, I defer to it and sacrifice for it, because the team, not the individual, is the ultimate champion. ~ Mia Hamm
There are few sports that can let you be a superstar on the playing field like soccer. It doesn’t matter what size you are, how tall you are, how confident or shy you are, how much you love or hate to run, or how athletic or clumsy you are – chances are good there is a position that will let you shine. That’s because the greatest lesson learned – in just one season of the game – is teamwork. A soccer player is only as good as its team, and vice versa.
Growing up, I played soccer every season for over six years and it’s made for many of my fondest childhood friends and memories. Today as a parent, I would be honored to call myself a “soccer mom” because of all the experiences and that my child could gain. If you feel the same way, enrolling in a program with Greensboro United Soccer Association (GUSA) is a great start, and now is the perfect time.
Greensboro United Soccer Association (GUSA) kicks off its summer programs next week, and then its Academy and Recreation Summer Camp in August. These programs are geared to children ages 3 ½ to 18 years old. Whether your child is new to the sport, or has been playing for years but wants to “up” his/her level, GUSA caters to players of all levels.
For the summer, they offer three programs grouped by ages (click here to see their age chart) and each program focuses on the technical skills of soccer (dribbling, passing, receiving, and ball striking). You can choose to attend one skill session a week for six weeks ($90) or you can attend unlimited sessions for $120. Each session practices at a different location (Proehlific Park or Greensboro Sportsplex), but all three sessions are coached by Greensboro United and SoccerOp staff coaches. For details and registration on these three sessions, click here.
Beginning in August, GUSA will kick off its Academy and Recreation Summer Camp at Proehlific Park on August 13, 14 and 15 from 9 am to 12. Cost is just $90 per camper. This will be a fun environment for kids to learn new skills and play with other kids from the recreation and academy program. For details and registration, click here.
For fall, registration is already open! GUSA’s Recreation league is signing up new and returning players
U4-U16 age groups. GUSA will offer age pure and gender specific divisions at each age group. For more information, and to sign up now, click here.
And year-round for kids under age 4, GUSA has a program too! It has partnered with Soccer Tots, a national franchise that helps promote physical fitness through fun games and soccer activities. For more information about this program, click here.
Just like the game of soccer itself, GUSA caters to players of all levels, skills, ages, and interest. One of the best things you can do for your child is encourage them to try the sport. Not only will they quickly learn lessons in teamwork, but also in self-esteem, hard work, dedication, winning, losing, plus how you can be physically active while having fun.
And before you know it, you will be among the growing number of moms shuttling your child to/from the fields while sacrificing your busy To Do schedules because you know nothing is more important to your child then being at every game, practice and end-of-season party. And you will be proud to do so, as well as sport the gigantic soccer ball magnet on the back of your mini van or SUV – and to ultimately call yourself a Soccer Mom.
