Everybody Knows the Best Sandcastles Are Made in the OBX

By Guest Blogger Erica Porter, a Twiddy customer

I was taught this in school…weren’t you?  During my first trip to Corolla on North Carolina’s Outer Banks (OBX), I quickly learned that my sandcastle building skills don’t hold a candle to a 10-year-old with tools that rival a master sculptor.

I was able to hone my castle building skills when 10 of my closest friends, my dog, and I rented a vacation home through Twiddy so we could celebrate the 4th of July in style. Even though we are friends, we planned this trip as if we were one huge family unit. We went in with four requirements: private pool (because you can’t always be on the beach), beachfront, pet friendly, and a great kitchen to prepare our “family” meals.  Twiddy had so many options for us to choose from, and I think we settled on a great house.  We were located in a cul-de-sac with our own beach access point.  It was like our own little neighborhood that just happened to have the best landscape ever! We even got a Flip cam from Twiddy to document our week in the OBX.

When I finally made my way to the beach, I was blown away. This was my first time in the OBX and the beauty was breathtaking. Even though a lot of folks were in town for the holiday, the beach wasn’t crowded at all. We had lots of room to sprawl out, yet I was close enough to scope out kids I could secretly challenge to a castle building contest. I think they knew because I could feel them laughing at my cartoon-shaped sand molds. Just know, when you visit the OBX, make sure your tools are legit. I failed on that task, but I will definitely be prepared for my next visit.

After I accepted defeat, I was able to focus on the rest of my week in Corolla. My friends and I had a great time making memories, and we plan on continuing this tradition for years to come. One day I’ll show up with kids of my own, but until then I hope every 10 year old is on the lookout. I will build a castle that even Will & Kate will want to vacation in. Bring it!
